They can be either free standing, mounted on a base, or hung from the wall. The pieces can have a front side, but they should have interest on all sides. Subject matter can be either human, insect, animal, seedpod, or plant. In other words they must reference living form, but also abstract it in interesting ways. Height should be between 10 and 20 inches. If you are to work from a person or animal, the piece should be either actual size or enlarged. Insect pieces must be enlarged. Work in a rapid, collage-like manner, freely changing your mind as you go. Neatness is not the goal. You may work from memory, life, or from a photograph.

Your preliminary designs should be substantially different from each other. If one is a wall mounted portrait, consider designing your second piece to be free standing, or an insect, plant, or animal. You will be selecting between these two designs for your final project.
